This $100 million urban water pipeline project was constructed for SA Water by the MDBE engineering construction company, a joint venture between Built Environs and McConnell Dowell.
MDBE construction the mains water pipeline and associated pumping and other structures to connect the Adelaide Desalination Plant, currently under construction at Port Stanvac, to the existing mains water reservoir at Happy Valley, in Adelaide’s southern suburbs.
The project required the design and construction of the entire transfer pipeline system, including over 12 km of 1.6 m-diameter mains pipes, a 300 ML/day transfer pump station and a 9 ML 44m-diameter and 6m-high break pressure tank.
Constructed in a mainly urban environment, the project required meticulous planning and liaison with local authorities and communities. Traffic planning and management was critical, as much of the route follows Lonsdale Road, a high-traffic dual carriageway that links Adelaide’s southern coastal suburbs.
The Built Environs engineering capability that delivered this project is now provided by the South Australian engineering office of parent company McConnell Dowell, offering clients access to both the expertise of the former Built Environs engineering teams and the international experience of McConnell Dowell.
