Common User Facility (CUF)

In December 2009, Built Environs, as a member of the MDBE joint venture with McConnell Dowell Constructions, completed the $180 million Techport Australia Common User Facility (CUF) shipbuilding complex on the Port River at Osborne, South Australia.

The first hase of the work was performed under an early contractor involvement (ECI) contract with Defence SA, a subsidiary of the South Australian Government.

In the second phase, MDBE delivered a range of building, civil engineering, electrical engineering and mechanical engineering components for the Common User Facility, including:

  • Civil, mechanical and electrical engineering works, buildings and services associated with the shiplift and transfer systems.
  • A 210 m x 25 m fit out wharf.
  • About 450,000 m3 of river bed dredging to depths of up to 20 m.
  • A 160 m long shiplift.
  • A 300 m runway and dry berth.
  • Site works, site services, and security.
  • Project management and superintendence of the shiplift and transfer system contract.

Work was performed on land and on barges, with a high degree of technical challenge and special attention paid to safety and environmental performance.

This was a significant engineering construction project for South Australia that has delivered a world class ship building and refurbishment facility well in time for the ship building works that are to commence on site.

The success, quality and timely delivery of this project illustrates what can be achieved with a collaborative and high performance project culture.

The success of the Common User Facility project has proven the robustness of the MDBE business and has resulted in a decision to pursue other significant engineering opportunities under the MDBE banner, including the Adelaide Desalination Project Transfer Pipeline.
