In March 2011, Built Environs completed construction of an eight hectare $44.1 million extension to the Ellenbrook Shopping Centre for the Insurance Commission of Western Australia at Ellenbrook, about 50 km north of Perth, Western Australia, for the Insurance Commission of Western Australia.
The development was designed to achieve a four star Green Star rating and added around 19,000 m2 of lettable area (24,000 m2 of gross floor area) to the current 10,000 m2 shopping centre and included a Big W discount department store, a Coles supermarket, specialty stores and variety stores.
The single storey structures are a combination of steel and precast wall framing, concrete floors, masonry and precast walls, a metal deck roof with skylights, steel-framed awnings and aluminium doors and windows.
Exterior finishes include coloured and painted precast concrete, pre-painted Vitrapanel cladding, Reckli-finished concrete panels, textured render finishes and in-situ and unit paving.
As well as constructing the building and tying the structure in with the existing facilities, the project included amenities, central plant, mall furniture, signage and around 49,000 m2 of external car parking.
Tying-in required cutting-in to the existing shopping centre structure, setting up a protective perimeter, building temporary works (including public protection), weatherproofing, and maintaining services so that the shopping centre could remain fully operational.
The team also delivered a full interior fit out of the discount department store and supermarket in accordance with the tenants’ requirements.
