In September 2002, Built Environs, in a joint venture with LRM, completed the $48 million second stage of the Adelaide Southern Expressway between Noarlunga and Reynella, near Adelaide, South Australia.
As well as laying down roadway, the project involved the construction of major earthworks, four bridges, five culverts, landscaping, lighting and noise mounds, and required 15,000 m2 of retaining walls and 1,200,000 m3 of cut-to-fill, including 200,000 m3 of blasted rock.
During the pre-construction review process, the joint venture team helped the client find and negotiate $3 million in cost savings, while diligent planning brought construction of bridges forward so that raw site-sourced materials could be moved easily across the project.
With the expressway running close to residential areas, careful management of blasting, dust, noise and stormwater run-off was required. The project successfully met all the relevant EPA regulations.
In 2002, the project received a range of state and national civil construction and engineering awards from the Institute of Engineers Australia, the Master Builders Association and SA Case Earth.
