In October 2010, Built Environs completed construction of a 1,800 m2 single-storey four-tenancy shopping centre in Bournemouth Crescent, Wembley Downs, WA.
The shopping centre has since been occupied by an IGA supermarket and three other businesses.
The building was constructed on a reinforced continuous concrete pedestal, with structural steel columns, tilt-up precast concrete panels and a metal roof, and features DigiGlass with graphics explaining the history of the area.
High R-ratings for all roof and wall insulation were specified to help reduce heating and cooling requirements for the centre.
An acoustic and crash barrier wall was required to protect the neighbours from excessive noise and an adjacent child care centre playground from truck movements associated with the supermarket. These walls consisted of large bored piles with structural steel columns supporting tilt and acrylic panels. Given the proximity to the site of small children, safety was paramount during construction.
The project required some tight time management towards the end of the programme. With only two weeks before handover, the architects had to re-design all toilet areas and incorporate a new extra fire pump. Built Environs completed this work in one week, much to the delight of the client.
