ASC Submarine Maintenance Support Tower, SA
Duration: July 2013 to May 2014
Contract type: Managing Contractor
Summary: Built Environs constructed a submarine maintenance support tower at ASC Pty Ltd’s Osborne site in Adelaide. The new facility, which was delivered to tight timeframes, will be key to reducing the duration of submarine maintenance periods, thereby delivering better fleet availability to the Royal Australian Navy (RAN)
Since July 2013, Built Environs worked closely with the client under an early contractor involvement (ECI) consultancy phase to finalise the design of the new facility.
Building the 13-m-high tower within an existing facility presented many challenges for the team, including working to a staged programme that enabled ASC to ready one submarine for return to service and prepare another to enter ‘deep maintenance’ while Built Environs continued the construction effort.
Built Environs’s rigorous approach to planning ensured the target completion date of the end of May 2014 was met, in turn ensuring that ASC was able to work to fixed submarine maintenance dates.
Built Environs has successfully completed similar Defence sector facilities in proximity to this project. In 2011, the building contractor constructed two Outfit Support Towers to facilitate ASC’s assembly of the RAN’s Hobart-class Air Warfare Destroyers. In 2009, Built Environs delivered the multi-award-winning Techport Australia Common User Facility in joint venture with McConnell Dowell.
