South Australia Police Headquarters, SA
Duration: November 2009 to July 2011
Value: $65 million
Contract type: AS 4000 Lump Sum
Summary: Built Environs was commissioned to construct new headquarters for South Australia Police (SAPOL) in Angas Street in Adelaide’s CBD.
Designed to achieve a five star Green Star rating, the 10-storey building features open plan office space, a glass and aluminium clad concrete façade and security features tailored to meet the long-term operational requirements of the police.
From the outset, Built Environs worked closely with the client, architects and structural and services engineers to provide buildability advice on the cost and time effects of different construction techniques and materials.
Construction included one of Adelaide’s largest concrete footing pours in decades, with nearly 1,500 m3 poured in just nine hours.
As well as managing the usual challenges associated with working in a CBD environment, the project team was required to maintain emergency vehicle access through the site to the adjacent South Australian Metropolitan Fire Service headquarters.
Built Environs successfully integrated construction with the client’s fit-out contractor to deliver the building a month ahead of schedule for occupancy by more than 1,100 SAPOL employees.
The project received a Commendation from the Australian Institute of Building in 2012.
