University of South Australia Catherine Helen Spence Building, SA

Duration: October 2003 to April 2005

Value: $30 million

Contract type: AS 4000-1997

Summary: This complex project involved the construction or upgrade of three buildings on the busy University of South Australia City West campus on North Terrace in the Adelaide CBD: the Catherine Helen Spence Building, Dorrit Black Building and Kaurna Building.

While the three buildings share a raw industrial appearance with exposed internal services and off-form concrete, each building is architecturally unique.

The Catherine Helen Spence Building was constructed in two stages: the first, an upgrade of sections of the existing building and, the second, a 350 m2 extension of the existing four-storey library building. The project included the creation of a new entry and library information counter.

Completed in conjunction with the two other buildings, the Catherine Helen Spence Building was delivered on time and on budget while the library remained operational.

All three buildings were constructed in a busy operational campus environment, with the project teams liaising with the university’s various stakeholders to minimise disruption.

Partly as a result of the success of this work, Built Environs was subsequently contracted to construct the university’s Hawke Building.
